‘Uncle’ Siggie’s Paintings

NB: This page is intended for my immediate family so will mean practically nothing to anyone else apart from them and any people mentioned in the text below.

Hi folks, these are the paintings left to us by ‘Aunt’ Peggy Jacobson. Sorry about the quality, but I didn’t have long to set the photos up and there’s glass on the two smaller ones in which you can see reflections of me with the camera.

All the photos are quite large so it will take a while to download them to your computer. I hope you get an idea of them, anyway.

By the way, none of the paintings are signed on the front, but one is on the back and one other has a dedication to someone. Dad can fill you in on the details, although it was quite difficult to decipher in places.

Latest additions:

13-Aug-2003

I have recently taken more photos, but this time of the back of the paintings. There are a few words of dedication and other currently undecipherable notes. This is primarily for the benefit of an Australian researcher (Pierre Palayan) who is researching the life of Sigismund Goetze.

I have also added a photo of the painting that dad sold after inheriting it from Aunt Elizabeth (Mond) recently.

N.B. Most of these images are quite large (>1MB) so will take a while over a modem connection. I had to keep these sizes to retain the quality of the images and thus the readability of the already vague inscriptions.

'Zouaves'

This is the picture that dad inherited from Auntie Elizabeth Mond and recently sold at auction. It is a digital photo of a photocopy of the auctioneer's pamphlet. Hence the lack of colour and definition.

The auctioneers' description at the bottom of the page reads:

97 (the lot number, I assume. Ed)

Sigismund Christian Hubert Goetze (British 1866-1939)

'Zouaves'- Portrait of Francis and Philip Mond, sons of Emile Mond, Esq.

signed and dated 'Sigismund Goetze. 1907.' (lower right), oil on canvas
