A note from Maxtor:

Maxtor model numbers may also be designated as either D540X-4D, D540X-4K, or D540X-4G on your hard drive. Drive models with the "4D" and "4K" suffix support Ultra ATA 100 transfers and units with the "4G" suffix are newer models supporting Ultra ATA 133. All other specifications for these units are identical, the only difference being the place of manufacture and the jumper setting configurations.

Andy says: This note implies that the D540X-4D and D540X-4K are identical in every way apart from jumper settings, yet the 4K works in the HDS1 and the 4D doesn't. Their geometry even ties up as well. I don't understand.

* Unless the VCR was supplied as new with a 80GB drive or recently had its drive replaced by a JVC service shop, the 80GB drive requires a replacement EEPROM. Replacing it is not for the faint-hearted or amateur. It is a surface-mount device and requires special removal equipment. If you are in the UK, I have a contact who can do this for you. You still only get 40GB.
